*Family Bike Ride for Adults and Older Children -Led by Allyce Kimerling, the bike ride will start and end at the Temple. The route will be planned with the age and skill-level of the participants in mind. It will be fairly flat and appropriate for children who are old enough to ride on a low-car-traffic street and to cross busier streets safely with minimal supervision. Because no carless bike paths are accessible directly from the temple, we may do some riding on the road or crossing busy streets like Broadway or Telegraph. Please submit your name and the ages of the participating children along with a phone number so we can call to cancel the ride if it rains. Everyone must wear a bicycle helmet. *Email shabbat25@aol.com or call (510) 531-4530 to reserve a place.
Or choose among the following shorter events:
From 2:30 to 3:30pm:
A Recital of Ladino & Romantic Spanish Songs – Enjoy an hour of music performed by Ruben Gomez, tenor, accompanied by the Bob Schoen trio. Ruben will present traditional Ladino folksongs and songs of prayer & devotion written in the unique Judeo-Spanish language that Sephardic Jews have used since the Middle Ages. The program will also include haunting Spanish songs of romance, love, and desire.
OR
*Jewish Death & Mourning – The death of a loved one is the life-cycle event most likely to bring a Jew back to tradition. But what is the tradition, and where does it come from? This presentation and discussion, held in the Piedmont home of Dan Fendel, will look at Jewish mourning practices, their sources, and how the tradition has been adapted by Temple Sinai. Co-presenters Dan Fendel and Robin Reiner both have backgrounds in this field. Dan worked for 20 years with a (secular) grief-support organization, Namaste, and now co-chairs both our Caring Community and our Chevra Kadisha committees. Robin is a certified Funeral Director, and works at Sinai Memorial Chapel’s San Francisco office. *To reserve a place, call (510) 531-4530 or email shabbat25@aol.com.

Yiddish and Hebrew Influences on the Music of Tin Pan Alley’s Golden Age – We all know that American popular music during the first half of the 20th Century was dominated by Jews, as composers, lyricists, and even as publishers. It could be argued that Tin Pan Alley music was Jewish music. While the popular song reflected Jewish sensibilities and heritage, there is much evidence that this music's inheritance was much more explicit than we thought. A Phil Rubin Production in the Sanctuary
OR
*“It’s No Ordinary Challah" – A non-participatory demonstration at the Montclair home of Joanne Rocklin. Everyone will get the detailed recipe and an opportunity to see the challah at various stages. The recipe is special because of an extra step, making the bread particularly tasty and soft. Joanne also has a tip to help fit challah-baking into busy lives, especially for those who work all day on Fridays. Joanne can seat 15 comfortably in her kitchen while she demonstrates at the counter.
