Haazinu, Deuteronomy 32
Haazinu, Deuteronomy 32, begins with a poem or song to the children of Israel, claiming G-d's greatness. Moses summons "heaven and earth" to witness what will happen if the Jewish people fail to embrace the Torah which is being given to them as they enter the Land of Israel. He reminds the people how they were rescued from obliteration in every generation, and that they should be grateful for G-d's kindness in sustaining them in the wilderness and bringing them to a land of such abundance. Moses warns them how these physical goods can lead people to become self-satisfied and over-indulgent, corrupting their morals. When Moses finishes this recitation, he says to the people, "Take to heart all these words ... enjoin them upon your children ... for this is not a trifling thing for you, it is your very life, and through it you shall long endure on the land that you are to possess upon crossing the Jordan River". Then G-d speaks to Moses, telling him to ascend to Mount Nebo, from which Moses can view the land of Canaan, which G-d is giving to the Israelites. As he was told earlier, Moses will die on this mountain because he broke faith with G-d at the waters of Meribath-kadesh. Moses is told that from here he will view the land, but may not enter it with the children of Israel.
