About Temple Sinai

We are a Reform congregation with a long history in the East Bay. Our beautiful sanctuary is almost 100 years old and is a historic landmark in the heart of Oakland. We are also a vibrant, progressive congregation that is committed to the cultivation of meaningful Judaism and a real sense of community.

In addition to worship services, Temple Sinai has many diverse offerings including a Preschool, Religious School and Adult Education courses. We are also well known for our community-building programs and for our dedication to social action.  For more information or to learn more about our community, please contact Executive Director Dorian Farrow, at (510) 451-3263, extension 304 or [email protected] for more information.

Attending High Holy Day Services with Temple Sinai

We are delighted that you are considering joining us for the upcoming High Holy Days.  In addition to celebrating and observing these special holidays, people often use these services as a way to get acquainted with our congregation and community.  We welcome you to do so.

Our members, who support our Temple year round, also absorb the overwhelming cost of our High Holy Days services (theatre rental, sound techs, moving trucks, security, etc.).  To help defray some costs, we ask non-members who are able to do so to contribute by purchasing passes.  We do not want finances to stand in the way of anyone joining us for services or from participating in our community.  Please contact the Temple office at 510-451-3263 if you have any questions or concerns about pass costs.

Children's Services and Childcare

Rosh HaShanah (September 21) and Yom Kippur (September 30)
2:30pm in the Temple Sinai Sanctuary

These afternoon kid-friendly services include singing, storytelling and lots of fun for families with children 5 and under. On Rosh HaShanah, the children sing Happy Birthday to the world and blow shofars. On Yom Kippur, parents and children are given “boo boo Band-Aids” and apologize to each other for any hurt feelings over the last year. The children also sit in the aisle of the Sanctuary and we unroll the Torah across their laps. This is a favorite service for most parents!
Passes are not required for the Children’s Services.

Childcare (3 months - 4 years)
We offer babysitting/childcare for the morning services held on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur at both the Paramount Service and Temple Sinai Sanctuary Service.
The cost is $20 per child, per service.

Children’s Program (K – 3rd Grade)
The High Holy Days Children's Program coincides with morning services held on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
At Temple Sinai, this program provides a special morning of art, music, storytelling, worship, and other activities appropriate to the celebration of these Holy Days for students in K-3rd grade.
At the Paramount Theatre, this program provides informal holiday themed activities for students in grades K-3rd grades. A snack will be provided in both locations.
This program is free of charge, although registration is required.

Pre-registration for both Childcare and the Children's Program is required at least 5 days before the program so that we may adequately arrange for staffing and snacks.

Book of Remembrance

It is a custom at Temple Sinai to honor the memory of family members or other departed loved ones in a "Book of Remembrance” that is distributed at the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur at Temple Sinai. In order for us to complete our Book of Remembrance on time, we ask that you please make your submissions by Friday, September 22, 2017. Thank you.
