Community Volunteer Opportunities

Help Fight Voter Suppression in Other States
Join other Sinai members and the RAC in a nonpartisan campaign to increase voter turnout in communities targeted by voter suppression tactics. It is essential that these voters know the importance of voting and where, when and how to do it.

Phone Banking There are weekly Zoom phone banks every Sunday at 2:00 PM until Election Day, and soon Thursday at 2:00 PM. It’s easier than you think when you share thoughts and tips with others.

Postcards You can order postcard kits through August 28. Possible Zoom postcard party the week of August 24.

Demand for Monday meals at First Presbyterian Church is increasing. Help by donating a large aluminum pan of mac and cheese, spaghetti etc. They also can use desserts - cakes, pies, cookies. Drop it off at First Presbyterian Church by 11:00am on Sundays or 9:00am Mondays. Depending on where you live, we may be able to arrange pick-up. For questions or more information, contact SinaiSocialAction@Oaklandsinai.org.

Telegraph Food Pantry Needs Our Help
Sign up here for a shift on Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30pm
The current pandemic and economic crisis is particularly hard on poor people and low-income workers in service jobs. The need for food is growing. To help meet the need, we're operating the pantry every Wednesday, at least through the end of 2020. The work is easy, kids over 10 are welcome to help, and our clients really appreciate our assistance. For more information, please contact Allyce Kimerling at Allycek@hotmail.com or (510) 435-1270.

Deliver Meals to Homeless Encampments
Temple Sinai and First Presbyterian church are looking for one or more volunteers to deliver volunteer-prepared meals to homeless encampments near the temple. If you have access to a vehicle and have about an hour free at 11:00 on one or more Mondays, contact SinaiSocialAction@OaklandSinai.org for details. The recipients are always very grateful.

People of the Book/Emergency Donations to Schools
Many families in our OUSD community are hurting desperately because of job losses and school closures due to COVID-19 . Although students (all children ages 0-18) can pick up meals for the week (15 per week) at various Food Bank locations, many parents are now without any income at all and unable to pay bills.

Besides donating to the Alameda County Community Food Bank, you can direct desperately needed funds specifically to a few of our Literacy Project’s partner schools in the following ways:

International Community School: Funds donated through this Oakland Public Education Fund website go directly to ICS. Click here to donate.

Greenleaf K-8: Donate to Greenleaf families through the Oakland Public Education Fund. Please write “Direct Relief” in the “Leave a comment” box. Click here to donate. This fund gets money directly to school families and will remain active throughout the COVID crisis (100% tax deductible). Thank you!
