Birdwatching with WTS
Sunday, April 26, 2026 • 9 Iyar 5786
9:00 AM - 12:00 PMOffsite
Explore birds of the East Bay hills with WTS at Valle Vista (Upper San Leandro Reservoir), a restricted natural area on the Moraga side of the Oakland Hills. Walking on dirt trails, we'll look for Acorn Woodpeckers, Wood Ducks, Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, and more. Led by expert birding instructor Maureen Lahiff of Golden Gate Bird Alliance (goldengatebirdalliance.org), this gentle walk is great for beginners as well as experienced birders. It is a particularly special treat because the Valle Vista area is off-limits to the general public and only accessible with a permit from EBMUD. The total walk will be about three miles and three hours round-trip, but it is an out and-and-back trail and you are welcome to turn around if you need to leave earlier. Youth aged 12 and over are welcome.
Wear sturdy walking shoes, a sun hat, and layered clothing. Bring a water bottle, snacks (optional) plus binoculars if you have them. If you need to borrow binoculars, let us know when you sign up. Valle Vista is located on Canyon Road in Moraga; directions will be sent to all registered participants a few days prior to the trip. The parking lot has a pit toilet , but there is no drinking water at the site. The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs.
The Birdwatching event will take place on April 26 with May 24 as a backup rain date.
Registration will open March 17, 2026.
