Programs & Groups

  • Adult B' Mitzvah – We warmly encourage adults to have their own B' Mitzvah ceremony. We offer supportive preparation and welcome adults of all levels of Jewish education and practice.
  • Adult Education Classes – Jewish education is a life-long endeavor. We offer a variety of classes covering everything from basic Judaism, to Hebrew, to Jewish history and philosophy.
  • Brotherhood – Temple Sinai men plan programs and activities open to every member of the community. They write and lead an annual Shabbat service, sponsor a softball team, organize poetry readings, host a golf scramble, and many other programs.
  • Adult Choir – Joining the choir is a great way to get involved in Temple life. You do not need to be a "professional singer" & there are no auditions. The ability to read music is helpful but not required.
  • People of the Book Literacy Project – We help school children learn to love reading and books, by partnering with underserved elementary schools in the Oakland School District, providing one-on-one tutoring as well as donating thousands of books to students and libraries.
  • Women of Temple Sinai – Temple Sinai women of all ages and backgrounds serving the needs of the Temple and community while building bonds of friendship. Sisterhood sponsors Rabbi's Book Reviews, the Sisterhood Shabbat, the Gift Shop, and more.
  • Youth Programs – exciting opportunities for youth in 4th – 12th grades to become directly involved in their Jewish community. These programs seek to combine an interactive mix of fun, social action, religious oriented programming and leadership training.

Committees

  • Access Committee – Endeavors to make Temple Sinai as accessible as possible, addresses access issues, and serves as an educational resource to congregants, committees and staff.
  • Caring Community – Coordinate a variety of activities to provide support, celebrate simchas, and reach out to each other in times of crisis and need.
  • Education Committee – Assesses the educational needs of the congregation (religious school, adult education, community celebrations) and helps to guide programming efforts.
  • Finance Committee – Monitors the Temple's financial status, helps to develop the Temple's annual budget, and sets financial policies.
  • Fine Arts Committee on Culture and Community – The Fine Arts Committee on Culture and Community creates community building events for the congregation and the wider community. While most of our programs involve live performances, such as concerts, plays, sing-alongs, poetry readings, and author presentations, we also coordinate blood drives, present films of historic or cultural importance, and co-sponsor many programs with other temple committees.
  • Sinai Green – Helps Temple Sinai maintain a green presence and continues to improve ways we can operate sustainably in the world.
  • Personnel Committee – Reviews and makes recommendations on staffing issues (labor law, benefits, contracts, etc.) Also serves as a management resource for the Temple's staff.
  • Preschool Parents Committee – Develops parent education programs and coordinates social gatherings, oversees Preschool tzedakah and social action projects, fundraising for Preschool, and works with the Early Childhood Director to discuss policy.
  • Ritual Committee – Works with the Rabbis and Cantor to discuss and develop religious services & holiday celebrations. Create and lead a monthly congregant-led alternative service.
  • Social Action Committee – Initiates and supports local community projects, provide informative programs to the Temple community meant to inspire tikkun olam, and conducts advocacy around social justice issues.
  • Membership Committee  The committee considers ways to attract new members to the Sinai community, addresses how to keep current members involved, and welcomes new members by keeping in touch with them for the first year of membership, delivering welcome gift bags, and sponsoring  two annual new member events.
